The DSR-570WSP Sony's DV-CAM camcorder.

The DSR-570WSP Sony's DV-CAM camcorder.

The DSR-570WSP
Sony's DV-CAM camcorder
which supersedes the DSR-500WSP has a hidden secret. At first glance the new camera's only difference is it's blue rinse! Sony has ditched the grey for a subtle dark blue metallic paint job.

Looking closer there are a few small changes.

There is now a window overlooking the switch setting for the audio input section, in the basic menu page 2 allows you to change the pre-set white balance setting, page 3 of the advanced menu allows you turn tone on or off when bars are selected, also at this page you can turn on the trigger for an external VTR to start and stop recording via the DV connector.

The secret I mentioned above is the CCZ 26 pin connecter is no longer just to slave a VTR.

Connect this to Sony's CCU-M5A and the camera becomes fully ccu controllable up to 300M with a DXF-51 viewfinder fitted.

Using the CCU-M5 this drops to 100M, which is still ample for most venues.

We also connected the camera to Sony's CCU-M7 which appeared to be fully functional but we haven't done any distance test's as yet.

Sony have also released an intercom adaptor the CA-370 allowing you to plug-in DR-100 headphones and when connected to the camera provides communication to the ccu, but as you will no doubt know if you have ever used Sony's DR-100's there's no external noise cancellation so are useless for filming anywhere other than libraries!

Trying to interface with Sony's intercom system with third party hardware can also result in little satisfaction.

On the whole the DSR-570WSP is everything the 500 should have been and we are already dealing with number of request for multi-camera use of this unit.

All this is applicable to the other units in this range including DSR-570WS, DSR-370 and DSR-370P.
