Siyakholwa - "We Believe"

Siyakholwa 1

Siyakholwa - "We Believe", produced and directed by Munier Parker of X CON Films, is a world-first for multi-faith childrens shows and was the pioneer shoot for the Mediahive Studio. This project was commissioned by the SABC and answered the President's call for moral regeneration within South Africa. He has a desire to create a moral and just society, and this starts with teaching children values and morals. Visual Impact - Magus provided all the rental equipment, operated by Zahir Isaacs, Wynand Basson and Thabo Thindi.

The set was designed and built by Afro Film Services and with Lighting Designer Trevor Lyle.

They had the following to say about working in the Mediahive Studio:

"The studio is really great. It was a great novelty to be the first production in there. Being given access to the building day and night also made the experience much less stressful."

The 52 episode programme, is aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 9 and involves two puppets and a presenter. The presenter is Ntokozo Madlala, who plays the character of Thandi. The puppeteers are Dudu, who is played by Refiloe Truelove Khena. She is an inquisitive little girl who asks all the questions the viewers themselves may be asking. Musa, who is played by Khaya Zondi, is the owner and wise manager of the Siyakholwa library. Musa has a keen interest in religion and likes to learn about rituals and festivals within the religions practiced in our country. Not only does it discuss the fundamental beliefs, looking at the similarities and differences between the religions, but it also encourages a genuine interest in the traditions and rituals that people belonging to them celebrate and enjoy. All the information on the show was researched by Alexis Petje and Lenise Llewellyn.

The viewer will learn about those who have different ideas about their creator and spirituality, without feeling threatened about their own while being taught about important values and morals as well. It is done in an unbiased fashion, promoting general knowledge on all matters related to religion and spirituality. It will expose the viewer to the history and origin of these religions, while making the connection to modern-day practices and human behaviour. Children will have the opportunity to learn about the religious holidays our country celebrates, instead of simply enjoying a day off school.

Siyakholwa 2

The show, written by Themba Mkhoma and Nthando Mhlongo and edited by James Tayler, will be aired on SABC 1. It will be presented in English, Zulu, Sotho, Xhosa, Setswana and some Afrikaans.

Shelva Carsten, Production Manager had this to say about their partnership with Visual Impact:

"Visual Impact have been amazing. They have been a great source of not only technical, but also production information. I particularly enjoyed dealing with Juanne and Zulpha. They are calm in the face of the worst tantrum."

Munier Parker, producer and director of the show commented:

"To say Marius and his team did an amazing job would be an understatement. Throughout the production they were absolutely amazing. I look forward to working with them again if they would have me there. The team at Visual Impact were stars."

This production serves as an innovative method to promote understanding and acceptance of others, to endorse a healthy sense of learning from these differences, rather than growing up with a superior attitude or a lack of knowledge.
